Apple is rolling out a new security feature that lets you lock down your iPad, iPhone, and Mac using a “gold bathroom accessory” that’s only available to Apple employees.
According to Apple, the gold bathroom accessory “is designed to prevent thieves from taking your iPad or iPhone from you.”
The feature is designed to work for the following devices: iPad: iOS 11.2 or newer, iOS 11 or newer with AirDrop support, iPad Pro, iPad Air, or iPad Mini 4.5 or newer iPhone: iOS 9.0 or newer (iPhone 5 or newer), iOS 9 or newer running iOS 11 with AirPods support, iPhone 5c or newer iPad: iPad Mini 2, iPad mini 3, or Apple TV 4 or newer Mac: OS X 10.11.5, OS X Yosemite, macOS Sierra, or Lion (12.14.0, 12.14).
The feature also “allows you to lock your iPad and iPhone with a passcode or a PIN,” according to Apple.
“With this feature, you can lock your device and remove it from your home network when you are no longer using it, and then re-lock your device if you have access to it.”
The “gold accessory” is only available for Apple employees and is “limited to just Apple employees,” according the company.
If you’re an Apple employee who is in the US and you’re not currently using an iPad, the accessory is only valid for the duration of your tenure at the company, so you should be able to activate the gold accessory.
Apple has been trying to get people to use more secure devices, including the iPad Air 2, Apple TV, and MacBook Pro over the past few years, so it’s a nice step in the right direction.
